Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT)
Technical and Further Education (TAFE)

Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) supports students with a disability who undertake study at their institution. Student services offered by all technical and further education providers can include Disability Support, Counselling, Employment and Careers Advice, Migrant and Indigenous support and Study Centres among other things.

People with a disability considering further education and training are encouraged to make contact with the Disability Consultants at CIT and TAFE the semester prior to the commencement of the course.

Disability support services can assist prospective students to:

  • Help make decisions about an appropriate course of study
  • Meet with department personnel about course requirements
  • Assist with enrolment procedures.

During your study the Disability Consultants can arrange as required:

  • Classroom support eg. Notetaker, interpreter, scribe, enlarged print
  • Tutorial support
  • Technical equipment and software
  • Ergonomic furniture
  • Examination procedures eg. Oral exams, scribing
  • Reader, additional time for exams, assignments.

Information required to register with Disability Support Services can include:

  • Documentation of disability
  • School reports
  • A statement from you regarding your
  • o Interests or goals
  • o Strengths and weaknesses
  • o Reading, literacy and numeracy levels
  • o Supports / adjustments / management techniques used that assisted you at school
  • o Other options for study or employment that you have considered

The above information will be discussed personally with you at interview. All services are free and confidential to registered students with Disability Support Services.

Students are encouraged to make prior arrangements to discuss their proposed course of study and any assistance that may be required. Adjustments are negotiated on an individual basis.

ACT Government Scholarships for CIT students

The ACT Government provides a limited amount of funds for CIT Students who are in financial need and who are committed to study. These funds are used for student fees and books/equipment essential for the course.

Alternative programs provided at CIT include:

Learning Options (Literacy and Numeracy)

Learning Options provides small group customised work in literacy and numeracy. Day and evening classes are conducted. The course can be used as either a pre-skills training course or to assist with skills once a course is commenced. The client determines the skills that they need.
