Information services provide information and knowledge to people with a disability that can help them to participate in the community and to make choices about the services they receive.

Access City Hotline

Access City Hotline is a free service that assists people to establish a seamless path of referral for the resolution of access concerns. Examples of access issues include:

  • difficulty gaining wheelchair access to buildings
  • problems negotiating damaged walkways
  • lack of kerb ramps
  • lack of directional assistance for people with vision or hearing impairments.

The Canberra Blind Society assists people who are blind, vision impaired and those who have difficulty seeing. The society will assist family members and friends who are closely associated with people with vision difficulties. Services provided include:

Career Information Centre

The Career Information Centre is located in the Centrelink Office in Braddon and provides the following service:

Career Information: Extensive library for job descriptions, training/personal requirements, contacts and prospects. The range of general information includes: career choices, mature age entry, women and work, apprenticeship and traineeships.

Education Institutions: Comprehensive range of university and CIT/TAFE handbooks from around Australia. Postgraduate and undergraduate information and guides are also available.

Youth Access: is for 15 - 24 year olds who are looking for work. The Career Information Centre can help with writing applications, resumes, interview skills and job search techniques. Referral to other community youth organisations and Centrelink services is also provided.

The Commonwealth Carelink Centre provide free and confidential information on community aged care, disability and other support services available locally, interstate or anywhere within Australia. Deafness Resource Centre

The ACT Deafness Resource Centre is a community organisation providing information, referral and advocacy services for the Deaf, Hearing Impaired and those with chronic disorders of the ear. Further support is available to the broader ACT community. The Centre provides:

  • specialist information on hearing related issues and services
  • information brochures, videos and sign language dictionaries
  • a referral service to help clients access mainstream services
  • advice and information on 'assistive listening devices' to help with difficulties hearing telephones and televisions
  • the sign language interpreter service
  • community awareness activities such as workplace specific Hearing/Deafness Awareness Training, Auslan classes and a range of other community education activities
  • advocacy related to hearing issues to help improve the life of clients

The Disability ACT Information Line provides people with a disability and their families a telephone and email contact that will:

Disability Coordination Office - Canberra and region

The Disability Coordination Office in the Canberra region is a "one stop shop", providing information about services to assist transition for people with a disability from secondary education, to further education and training and employment.

The Disability Coordination Office facilitates networks and collaborative projects to increase the post school participation of people with a disability in their community.

JobAccess

JobAccess is an initiative of the Australian Government to support the employment of people with disability.

JobAccess is a one-stop information shop for all matters relating to the employment of people with a disability. It provides a free, confidential, national online service and telephone line providing information and expert advice to:

  • job seekers with a disability
  • workers with a disability
  • employers and co-workers of an individual with a disability
  • employment service providers

The JobAccess website has step-by-step guides and checklists on recruitment, job searching, adjusting a workplace, employer incentives, understanding rights and responsibilities at work and much more. The website also contains case studies and success stories as well as information on the full range of services and incentives available for people with disability and for current and potential employers.

Local Area Coordination Program (LAC)

The Local Area Coordination Program aims to build individual, family and community self sufficiency so that individuals with a disability can achieve what they want to achieve, live how they want to live and are valued as full and equal members of the ACT community.

Local Area Coordination promotes:

  • Self management
  • Personal advocacy
  • Family support and
  • Community development

Local Area Coordinators aim to make disability services and supports more:

  • Personal
  • Local
  • Accountable

and to support local people with disabilities and their families in their local communities. Therefore the shape of the service is deliberately kept flexible to response to people's changing needs.

Local Area Coordination will promote:

  • Focus on a meaningful life and family leadership
  • Emphasis on strengthening community capacity and less on funding
  • Greater emphasis on the principles of planning for the future, importance of personal networks, importance of community connections, complementary roles of services and partnerships
  • Stronger emphasis for family leadership, work with communities to support inclusion and the valued contribution of people with disabilities.
Program eligibility
  • An individual must have a physical, intellectual, cognitive and/or sensory disability and require sustained assistance.
  • Individuals must be under the age of 65 at the time they request support.
  • An individual must be a resident of Gunghalin or Woden Valley areas.
  • Individuals may access in the short-term for provision of information, advocacy, advice and/or options.
  • Individuals may access medium to long-term support of Local Area Coordination to ensure that plans and goals are achieved

Print Handicapped Radio ACT

Radio 1RPH broadcasts news and information not offered by other radio and television stations to people who are print handicapped. Radio 1RPH broadcasts on 1125kHz in the AM band.

People who cannot read printed material are able to gain access to information that has been converted into an audio format by volunteers of the service. Radio programs include:

  • readings from daily newspapers, magazines and books
  • theme programs on topics such as books, music, gardening, religion, current affairs, health, science, computers and travel
  • programs from blind organisations, the ACT Library Service, ACT MS Society, Council on the Ageing, RSPCA, Heraldry and Genealogy and War Veterans
  • programs which cover a wide range of publications from a variety of Christian churches

Therapy ACT

Therapy ACT is a division of the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services. They provide multidisciplinary therapy and support services for children with delays in development from birth to 8 years of age, and people with developmental disabilities aged from birth to 65 years where the disability is present before the age of 18 years.

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work and psychology services are available.

Clients who meet the eligibility criteria will be prioritised according to their need. For referrals to Therapy ACT you should call the Intake Service on 6205 1246.
