ACT Government Colleges

There are eight government colleges in the ACT. All colleges provide support for students who have a disability. In addition, eligible students are able to enrol in the Canberra College Futures Program or the Dickson College Foundations for Independence program. Students in these programs are able to undertake a range of packages including special education and mainstream courses, vocational learning and training, and independent living classes.

The focus of the programs is on providing students with a range of learning opportunities and experiences to equip them to become effective citizens. All students in these programs have an Individual Learning Plan that outlines both the educational and pathways goals.

A significant focus for students is on the preparation for life after college and establishing links to appropriate community agencies and resources. This is also detailed through the student's Pathways Plan.

If you would like more details on these programs or to see if you are eligible for special education support, contact the counsellor at your local college.

Catholic Colleges

There are four Catholic Colleges and three Catholic Independent Colleges in the ACT. Each college offers a different range of programs and/or packages to cater for the individual needs of their students, these being: mainstream classes, vocational courses, life skills courses and individually modified courses (using the BSSS M Framework).

The opportunities offered by each college are designed to provide all students with an inclusive learning environment so that they may develop as life long learners. Each student has an Individual Education Plan, which outlines both the educational and transitional goals.

Transition programs offered by the colleges link students with outside agencies and encourage students and families to focus on student strengths when investigating future pathways.

ACT Independent Colleges

All Independent Colleges in the ACT provide positive support for students with a disability. Using both government and private funding these colleges arrange opportunities for students to have access to specialist programs, to be supported in mainstream classes and to take part in vocational and technical education programs. Students will have a negotiated and agreed Individual Learning Plan.

There will be opportunities for Australian School-based Apprenticeships, work experience and vocational education courses. Further to this students will have access to staff and counselling support to identify realistic and achievable goals and objectives in preparing them for life after school.

Links to post school agencies will be facilitated that will assist the student to achieve the best possible outcome after leaving school.

More details about these opportunities can be obtained by contacting the student services staff at the colleges listed below. Alternatively contact the Association of Independent Schools of the ACT.
