Student Pathways Planning

E-mail

Student Pathways Planning is an ACT Department of Education and Training initiative designed to support all Year 9-12 ACT Government students in planning their transition through education, to further study, training and employment.

Why Pathways Planning?

In an increasingly complex world young people need greater support to make informed choices and to negotiate and navigate successful pathways to adulthood.

Students are supported by teachers as they explore their personal strengths, interests, achievements and goals. Students record their unique experiences and reflections on an Individual Student Pathways Plan. This plan then becomes a working document which students use to make decisions as they transition through school.

What is Student Pathways Planning?

Student Pathways Planning is a process designed to:

  • Promote and strengthen pastoral care for all students in years 9 to 12 as they move through school to work and/or further study
  • Support students to explore their unique capabilities by identifying their strengths, interests and goals
  • Enhance students' ability to plan their personal and educational pathways, and review their choices as they progress through secondary school through specially designed school programs.

As they progress through Years 9 -12 students will:

  1. Identify strengths and record achievements
  2. Reflect on thinking and learning
  3. Plan personal goals and check progress
  4. Decide which pathways to explore for work and/or further study
  5. Develop and use a Student Pathways Plan to assist them in planning for the future and making decisions.

Students can use their Pathways Plan to:

  • Reflect on personal strengths and achievements
  • Record decisions about courses of study, work and training
  • Check if their learning and life goals are on track
  • Share their future choices with parents/carers, potential employers and teachers.

How can parents/carers support Student Pathways Planning?

  • Use the plan to guide discussions with your son/daughter about future study and work options
  • Work with your son/daughter to regularly update their plan and to ensure that their study package and other actions support their goals
  • Explore resources together, for example: colleges handbook/websites, CIT handbook/website, The Job Guide, MyFuture and the University Admissions Centre Advisor.

Student Pathways Plans?

A plan should contain evidence of personal strengths, interests, goals, capabilities, achievements and educational and career options. It may also include extras such as photographs or drawings as evidence.

As students progress through Years 9 to 12 they should be continually revising their plan. It is not designed to be a portfolio or a resume but can assist in developing both. The aim of the plan is to support decision making - keep it relevant.

Students should store their Pathways Plan in a relevant place that they can access on a regular basis and be updated from year to year.
